a) place: Νea Smyrni, 15-10-1947 (first copy) 1st note: The Festival of Asi-Gonia is a skerzo based on popular Cretan themes.Writing it, I wanted to convey, to the best of my abilities, a popular vibrancy together with a calm reverie. The original version was written for string orchestra in the autumn of 1946. But I always had in my mind a full orchestra. So in the summer of 1947 I managed to give it this final form, without skimping on the color. I don't know if I overdid it, but insist on emphasizing that in this work I gave equal and perhaps more attention to its color than to the symphonic orchestration and development. 2nd Note: The FESTIVAL OF ASI GONIA takes place each year in Chania, Crete. This work does not describe it. It takes the excuse of this fesitval to convey an atmosphere of popular liveliness, joy and vitality. It reflects, moreover, a nostalgia and reverie under the blue light of the Aegean. M.G.Th...."The whole work is built on 2 main themes which are sometomes heard in their original form and sometimes varied. I wrote it in the winter of 1946-47 for string orchestra although I was thinking of a full orchestra. I orchestrated it in the summer of 1947 in a flamboyant way that I've now rejected but I think it suited the ....and the the atmosphere of the work.
